Lately, I have been fascinated with seeing documentaries about clothing designers….whether its Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton or Lagerfeld Confidential, or the oldie but goodie, Unzipped with Mr. Mizrahi, I lovingly obsess….. Given, the above picture taken in the movie theater at the first week release of “VALENTINO: THE LAST EMPEROR” looks a bit dodgy, but I just had to get a shot.
It follows Senor Valentino around creating his last 2 collections, all climaxing to his retirement following his 45 years working at his own company. Its particularly interesting to see his relationship with Giancarlo Giammetti, his partner in work and love for practically all that time. I’d like to say its heartbreaking to see him leave the company he created and loved, but the film keeps it lighter in tone by displaying the hilarity of his generous Italian bravado and ego. Though not my MOST favorite, I think its a definite must-see, and next week you can attend a post-screening panel with a Q&A with Mr. Leon Talley!
